THE MOLECULAR BASIS OF INFECTIOUS DISEASE~Although modern science and society have developed ways to fight infections, they remain a problem as newly emergent and reemerging infections caused by agents such as HIV and Ebola, as well as man-made plagues spread by bioterrorism. This colloquium looks at both the science behind infectious diseases and their portrayal in the cinema. We will consider old and new cinema plots to see how they are driven by stories concerning infectious disease and how the stories have changed over time due to the emergence of the biotechnology industry. Shorter papers will critique viewed films from the perspective of a scientist. Students will address the molecular basis of infectious disease as part of their class presentations. The final paper will address the molecular basis of a disease based on readings from review and primary scientific journals.
