FRCL 10160 - WHAT ARE WE DOING HERE?
WHAT ARE WE DOING HERE?: LIBERAL ARTS COLLEGE IN THE 21ST CENTURY~ Drawing from history, economics and politics, we will explore and discuss the purpose, meaning and challenges of liberal education in the 21st century. We will consider what it means to learn something for its own sake—not as a means, but as its own end; liberal education and social responsibility—what constitutes an educated citizen; utility and liberal learning—what liberal learning has to do with being human. We will read Distinctively American: the Residential Liberal Arts Colleges by Koblik and Graubard as well selected articles and materials from other sources. You will learn to think critically and to do college level research and writing.
