FRCL 10120 - BIOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF MONSTER |
BIOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF MONSTERS~
In literature and cinema, abnormal and frightening creatures are presented as common characters. But to what extent do these creatures have any sound basis in science? Students in this colloquium will analyze fictional creatures from the perspective of science, to see what aspects of their lives and adventures are theoretically possible and biologically plausible. Students will draw on physics, chemistry, evolutionary theory, ecology, and comparative physiology to conduct original research into a fictional creature of their own choosing.
Students will complete a total of three original written assignments, including a final research paper, and make three public presentations in class.
